43 killed in another bloody weekend in Cape Town – 25 were shot and 12 stabbed

Another bloody weekend in Cape Town saw 43 people being murdered, Premier Alan Winde confirmed on Monday.

Provincial forensics services recorded these numbers between Friday night and Monday morning.

“[The] SAPS started running a national joint operational and intelligence structure operation on Thursday night in the areas of Philippi, Steenberg and Delft,” Winde said in a statement.

“We welcome the fact that 143 arrests were made, and guns and drugs confiscated, but despite this heavier police presence, and [Police] Minister Bheki Cele himself going out on patrol, 43 people were still murdered – some of them in the very areas where the operation was held.”

SANDF soldiers started arriving in Cape Town on Monday before hitting the streets to assist SAPS in a clamp-down on gang-related crime.

The highest number of murders were recorded in Mfuleni, where six people were killed.

Bheki Cele told to ‘voetsek’ when visiting the Eastridge crime scene of murdered six-year-old

Police minister Bheki Cele arrived at a cold reception in Eastridge on Monday, with a large crowd of Eastridge residents complaining of police incompetence and baying for the blood of the suspected murderer. Little Stacey Adams’ body was found in a shallow grave on Sunday.

The six-year-old had been missing since Saturday, after her grandmother sent her mother’s house in De La Rey street, Eastridge. A search party alerted police to the shallow grave, and the tiny body was exhumed.

Violence erupted in the community; locals frustrated with perceived police ineffectiveness, and others emotionally broken following a tide of violence, particularly victimising children, lashed out at police. The large crowd voiced their concerns regarding the police investigating, criticizing their failure to secure the crime scene, and allowing people to walk under the crime scene tape to get a closer look.

City of Cape Town pushes for “zero tolerance” on land protests

After weeks of land occupation protests, Cape Town was unusually quiet on Tuesday morning. While communities remain frustrated in their demand for housing and land, the City of Cape Town has announced it is taking a “zero tolerance approach” to land occupations.

A priority committee is set to be established within the South African Police Service (SAPS) to deal with land protests after city officials requested more action to curb protest action.

In the past two weeks, land occupations have been organised in Vrygrond, Parkwood, Mitchell’s Plein, Gugulethu and Ocean View. In total, the city says it knows of 34 areas where land and housing protests have taken place.

In Vrygrond, land occupation began in April. By mid-May, the protest action had spread 8km north to the nearby community of Parkwood, where residents occupied a field in a similar demand for housing.
